GAYLORD - Earlier this month, Gaylord High School students stuffed 200 backpacks with new school supplies for Hurricane Katrina survivors.
The project was initiated by students in the Moderately Cognitively Impaired (MCI) classroom who wanted to contribute to relief efforts. The MCI classroom then approached the Gaylord National Honor Society (NHS) with the idea, and a partnership was formed.
NHS organized several fund-raising events including a Make a Difference Day dance sponsored by the Student Council, an antique picture fund-raiser and proceeds from a wreath sale.
The backpacks were delivered to the Evangelical Free (E-Free) Church who offered to distribute the backpacks in Mississippi on its Nov. 5. mission trip.
