Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey has earned the Gold Seal of Approval for stroke care. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) has awarded Northern Michigan Hospital Primary Stroke Center Certification.
Northern Michigan Hospital earned this distinction after the Joint Commission conducted an on-site review in March. Northern Michigan Hospital Stroke Center is one of seven certified stroke centers in Michigan and the only one located in northern Michigan.
“A certified stroke center like we have at Northern Michigan Hospital is required to have 24/7 neurology and neurosurgery coverage, an acute rehabilitation program to help patients recover from stroke and nurses, therapists and dietitians who all trained specifically to treat stroke patients,” said Roger Gietzen, MD, neurologist and program director of the Stroke Center.
“We're proud to achieve this distinction,” said Thomas Mroczkowski, president and CEO. “Joint Commission Primary Stroke Center Certification recognizes Northern Michigan Hospital's commitment to providing outstanding care to our patients and our community. Neurologist and Program Director, Dr. Roger Gietzen and his Stroke Center team are to be congratulated for achieving this prestigious recognition.”
The Joint Commission's Primary Stroke Center certification is based on the recommendations for primary stroke centers published by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association's Statements/Guidelines for Stroke Care. The Joint Commission launched the program - the nation's first - in 2003. A list of Joint Commission-certified programs is available at www.jcaho.org.
