Stella F. Hlywa

Stella F. Hlywa, 93, of Gaylord, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007 at McReynolds Hall.

Mrs. Hlywa, of Ukrainian descent, was born July 23, 1913 in Cleveland, Ohio and was raised in Owosso. In 1930, she married Michael Hlywa. From 1954 to 1971, Stella owned a Kowalski delicatessen in Detroit.

The couple bought property in Gaylord in 1954 and moved permanently to the area in 1971.

Stella was the Otsego County Centennial Queen in 1973. She was instrumental in the development of Alten Zimmer. She traveled extensively throughout the United States in her motor home and traveled throughout Europe.

She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting.
Stella was a motivator and an inspiration to those around her. Stella shared and taught her craft skills to the residents of Alten Zimmer, McReynolds Hall and her great-grandchildren. Most of all, Stella, who was known as "Grammy Love," taught love.

She was a member of St. Mary Cathedral parish.

She is survived by her son, Michael (Lucy) of Manistique; three grandchildren, Linda (Victor) Burzynski, Susan (Bob) Topp and Danny (Diana) Hlywa; eight great-grandchildren, Michael J. Hlywa, Michelle Hlywa, Joshua Burzynski, Tara Burzynski, Matthew, Sarah, Michael R. and Jamie Topp; and her brother, John Sincissen of Chesaning.

Her husband, Michael, preceded her in death in 1973.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Jan. 18 at 11 a.m. from St. Mary Cathedral, the Rev. John McCracken, officiating. Burial will take place at Resurrection Cemetery.

Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held today (Wednesday) from 2:30 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Thursday beginning at 10 a.m.

The St. Mary Knights of Columbus will offer a rosary tonight at 6:30.
