• The Weyerhaeuser Canoe Marathon will begin Saturday, 9 p.m., at Peninsular Street in Grayling. The 120-mile race runs along the AuSable River from Grayling to Oscoda. The Avita Water Black Bear Bicycle Tour runs in conjunction with the marathon and starts eight hours later.

• The Otsego County Fair Board and the Gaylord Area Council for the Arts (GACA) are partnering for the second year to present a Free Stage at the Otsego County Fair Aug. 21-25. Application forms are being sent to last year’s performers, and new applicants should contact GACA soon. Performers are not paid, but are permitted to sell CDs, posters and shirts publicizing their act, and to hand out flyers and schedules of their performances. Last year, around 33,000 people attended the Otsego County Fair. Call 732-3242 for an application form.

• The Otsego County Historical Museum and Gift Shoppe, 320 W. Main St., Gaylord, will be open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., until Labor Day. Admission is free; call 732-4568.

• The Budweiser Clydesdales will be in downtown St. Ignace today (Wednesday); in Cedarville on Thursday; and at Kewadin Casino in St. Ignace on Friday.

• Tom Stanton, author of “Ty and the Babe,” will be at the Otsego County Fairgrounds Thursday at 6 p.m. during the Michigan Little League Tournament Picnic. For information call 732-8899.

• The sixth annual Taste of Greece dinner will be Thursday, 4-8 p.m., at First Congregational Church in Traverse City. Tickets are available at the door or in advance for $12. Grecian specialties are served. Proceeds benefit the building fund.

• The public is invited to meet leader dogs Saturday, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., at the Gaylord Eagles Hall, 515 S. Wisconsin Ave. Eye checks for young children also available. Sponsored by the Gaylord Lions Club.

• The Grayling Rotary Club will hold its annual chicken barbecue Saturday, noon-6 p.m. at American Legion Post 106 on the I-75 Business Loop in Grayling. Tickets are $7 and available at the door or from any Grayling Rotarian. Proceeds benefit the community.

• The 20th annual Walloon Lake Antique Tractor, Engine and Craft Show is Thursday-Sunday at the Flywheelers Show Grounds in Walloon Lake. The event features antique farm equipment, demonstrations, children’s activities, food and more.

• Lewiston’s annual Timberfest is Aug. 3-5 and features pageants, an ultimate bartender/server contest, a parade, games, lumberjack shows, arts and crafts, musical entertainment and more. For information visit www.lewistonchamber.com.

• The Elk Country Animal Shelter will host its second annual golf scramble Sunday, July 29 at Thunder Bay Resort in Hillman. Saturday Night at the Movies continues Saturday at dusk with “Bad News Bears” under the Pavilion. Concerts and movies are free and open to the public.

• Stella Parton (Dolly’s sister) will perform Thursday, 6 and 9 p.m., at the Houghton Lake High School Auditorium. Parton has recorded 27 chart singles and was named female singer of the year by the Christian Country Music Association. Cost is $14 in advance and $18 at the door. Family admission is $39. • “The Big Wheel” will be shown today (Wednesday), dusk, at the Village Green parking lot next to the Indian River Chamber of Commerce in Indian River. Also, “American Pastime” will be shown Aug. 1. Shows & Workshops

• Crooked Tree Arts Center, (CTA) 461 E. Mitchell St., Petoskey, featuring its 27th annual Juried Fine Arts Exhibition at the arts center. Also, CTAC will host the second annual Paint-Out! on Saturday in Petoskey. Beginning at 8 a.m., artists will gather at various locations in Petoskey, Harbor Springs, Walloon Lake and Charlevoix and paint a day in the life of Northern Michigan. Register at Walloon Village General Store, Esperance in Charlevoix, Pier Restaurant in Harbor Springs or at the Crooked Tree Arts Center in Petoskey between 8 and 9 a.m. Final work must be returned, framed and ready to hang, at the arts center by 6 p.m. that day. Finally, CTAC is offering a paper batik workshop July 31-Aug. 2, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. each day. Class is geared for beginner and advanced students, ages teen to adult. • Grass River Natural Area (GRNA), County Road 618, Bellaire, has bluebird walks scheduled every Sunday at 11 a.m. until Aug. 12. No need to register. Zen natural walks are Mondays at 10 a.m. until Aug. 27. GRNA will host a “Creepy Crawlers” workshop today (Wednesday), 10 a.m., for kids; and an evening stroll through wetlands, along the river and into the forest on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Finally, GRNA will host naturalist Chuck Bauer for a presentation on interesting rocks and minerals. Polish a Petoskey stone to take home. Through Labor Day, the GRNA interpretive cabin is staffed by naturalists seven days a week, Monday-Friday, 10 a.m-4 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; call 231-533-8314.

• Basic motorcycle rider courses will be held July 27-29, and again Aug. 3-5, in Gaylord. Call 231-546-3142 to register.

• Bay View’s Cottage Walk and Tour on July 31 will feature tours of eight historic cottages in the Bay View area. Sponsored by the Bay View Women’s Council and Crooked Tree Arts Center, the walk will go from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Meet at the Petoskey High School or Petoskey United Methodist Church. Shuttles take attendees to Bay View. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 on the day of the event at the arts center.
