Billy Childs

PETOSKEY — Billy Childs, 2006 Grammy winner, and his Chamber Jazz Ensemble will take the stage at Crooked Tree Arts Center Saturday, Jan. 12 at 8 p.m.

Tickets are on sale now.

Nominated for a total of eight Grammy Awards, Childs received two of the coveted music awards for his 2005 album, “Lyric.” He won one Grammy for best instrumental composition for “Into The Light,” and the other for best arrangement accompanying a vocalist.

Childs’ solo jazz recording career began in 1988 when he released “Take For Example, This...,” the first of four critically acclaimed albums on the Windham Hill Jazz label. A long friendship with Chick Corea resulted in the jazz icon asking Childs to join his label, Stretch Records, upon Childs’ departure from Windham Hill Jazz.

Other notable accomplishments for the musician include being twice commissioned by the Monterey Jazz Festival, and in 2000, Childs arranged, orchestrated, and conducted the Dianne Reeves CD, “The Calling: Celebrating Sarah Vaughn.” He has also performed with his own trio in Carnegie Hall.
