Mind•Body•Spirit: Peace of mind
Wednesday, January 30, 2008 11:27 AM EST

GAYLORD — The holidays have come and gone and now it’s time to pay the piper. In this case, the piper being all of those credit card bills which began arriving in the mail after the first of the year.

If the annual holiday shock of dealing with all of that credit card debt has got you down and vowing to never overspend again, financial counselor Chris Kipina says now is the time to take the steps to ensure your peace of mind for next year.

“If people feel they spent too much this year I would encourage them to make a plan now for next year,” said Kipina, who provides free financial counseling through the nonprofit Green Path Debt Solutions in Gaylord.

According to Kipina, the problem is not the credit cards themselves  which are creating the problem for people who have found themselves facing more debt than they can handle. “Credit cards are only a symptom of the big picture, which is that there is more going out than coming in,” she said, referring to overall spending outpacing income.

Kipina said Green Path provides customized budget assistance based on specific financial problems for clients at an initial consultation to discuss debt management. “We help our clients come up with a budget and offer practical solutions to cut back on expenses to help them to better manage their finances.”

According to Kipina, it can be the little things which can make a big difference. “For example, you can save a lot of  money by taking a bag lunch to work rather than buying your lunch. We might suggest someone only eat out once a month rather than once a week as a way to save money. We’ll sit down and help a family come up with a budget to stay out of debt.”

Kipina said in some instances it may be appropriate to work with a client to set up a debt management program and come up with a payment plan as a way to get bills and debt under control.
