Anniversary: Old Depot Restaurant celebrates 20 years

The Old Depot Restaurant in Johannesburg will celebrate its 20th year in business today (Wednesday).

As part of the celebration, free dessert will be offered with a meal today (Wednesday) through Saturday, said owner Leonard Pohutsky.

The Old Depot menu includes a variety of Polish specialties from homemade pierogies, ribs and sauerkraut to fresh kielbasa and seafood dishes featuring salmon, halibut, codfish and shrimp, according Pohutsky.

Pohutsky and his wife, Karen, opened the restaurant on March 19, 1988, after working three months on the original logging-era train depot that served Johannesburg during the early 1900s.

The Pohutskys replaced the original building in 2001 with an updated structure while preserving the depot’s historic character. The focal point in the new building is a 1926 Seth Thomas tower clock, which also drives the cupola clock dial on the building’s roof.

The owners, along with their son, Chris, work daily in the kitchen preparing dishes ranging from classic favorites to new creations. The menu includes daily breakfast, lunch and dinner specials and utilizes products from local growers, butchers and fishermen whenever possible.

The Old Depot, located at 10826 M-32 East, Johannesburg, is open Sunday, 8 a.m.-2 p.m.; Monday, 7 a.m.-2 p.m.; Tuesday through Thursday, 7 a.m.-8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday, 7 a.m.-9 p.m. For more information call 732-3115.
