Saturday, March 22, 2008 12:07 AM EDT

SAGINAW — The Gaylord girls track and field team opened its season indoors Thursday with a strong showing at the Saginaw Valley State University Invitational.

Gaylord finished second among Division II teams, trailing only Goodrich.

The Devils topped Chippewa Hills, Cadillac and Linden, among others.

Sophomore Brittney Deerfield took the Blue Devils’ only first-place in the long jump, with a leap of 15 feet-8.5 inches.

Deerfield was also second in the 60m dash and ran a leg on the third-place 800m relay.

“Brittney has made a huge improvement in her sprinting already over last year and stepped right into the long jump without even being able to practice this spring and win it,” said Gaylord coach Jeff Kalember.

Junior Samantha Hunt also had a strong running day, taking second in the 3200m run and fourth in the 1600m run.

Junior Carlye Scheer took third in the shot put and 60m hurdles and was on the third-place 800m relay team.

“She had a huge day — earning us big points in big events,” Kalember said.

Junior Amber Kassuba placed third in the 3200m run while senior Maria Kulka was second in the 800m run and ran the opening leg of the second-place 3200m relay.

Senior Sloan Secord was third in the 1600m run and ran the anchor leg of the 3200m relay.

Sophomore Savannah Hypio was fourth in the 400m run and also ran on the 3200m relay while sophomore Brooke Arnold stepped into action and did a good job on both the 1600m and 3200m relays.

The Blue Devils return to action Tuesday at Lake Superior State University at Sault Ste. Marie.
