Gaylord girls opens soccer season with shutout road victory
Saturday, March 29, 2008 12:08 AM EDT

AUBURN — A well-conditioned Gaylord soccer team opened the regular season in good fashion Thursday, winning 2-0 at Bay City Western.

Junior Natalie Reszka scored a goal in each half as the Blue Devils head into the spring break on a positive note.

“We seemed to be the team in better shape,” said Gaylord coach Aaron Riley. “We played very good for our first real game outside. Our strong work ethic is really paying off for us.”

Junior Katie Hall and senior Erin Mee drew assists for Gaylord, who took an early lead and never looked back.

Junior Rose LeBlanc earned the shutout in goal. Riley noted seniors Brenda Beyer and Tessa Walsh and sophomores Hilary Puroll and Bailey Gooding as playing well.

“We did a good job given the conditions,” Riley said. “Hopefully the girls can get some exercise during the break so that we can be ready to go when we get back.”

The Blue Devils return to action Apr. 11 at home against Marquette.

JUNIOR VARSITY — Gaylord came out of the gates firing, downing Bay City Western 8-0 on the road Thursday.

Karly Burke and Paige Repar each netted two goals for the Blue Devils, while Kendal Agee, Stefanie Schmidt, Danae Klingler and Ligxy Velasco each had one. Velasco’s was her first ever goal.
