The Gaylord/Otsego County Chamber of Commerce will join Michaywé as host of today’s (Wednesday) Business After Hours. The monthly event is at Michaywé, 5-7 p.m. Admission is $5 for chamber members and $10 for “not-yet-members.” Business associates and friends may enjoy visiting while sampling appetizers Michaywé provides.
Honors: Grosberg recognized for outstanding work
JoAnn Grosberg, title manager at Alpine Title & Escrow of Otsego County, has received the prestigious “Alexander Award,” presented by Alpine Tile president Paul E. Alexander.
Grosberg was recognized for her outstanding performance in the areas of customer service, team work and product knowledge within the title and escrow industry. She has been employed by Alpine Title for two years and maintains a high degree of involvement in the Gaylord community.

Promotion: Fifth Third expands Jabour’s regional roleFifth Third Bank has announced that Brian Jabour, VP, will be expanding his regional manager role, and is now responsible for the Southeastern Region as well as the Northern Region.
These areas include Gaylord, Petoskey, Boyne City, Bagley, Grayling, Mount Pleasant and the Tri-Cities. In this role he oversees the sales activities for 12 banking centers located in these markets.
Jabour will continue to serve as the community president of Gaylord.
Jabour joined Fifth Third in 1999 as the banking center manager of the Holiday Hills location in Traverse City. He attended Oakland Community College of Detroit.
Jabour is an active Rotarian in Gaylord and is involved with the Gaylord/Otsego County Chamber of Commerce.
Workshop: Employment eligibility compliance is event topicThe Employer Training Council of Northwest Michigan will host The Paper Chase Workshop from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 16, at the Waterfront Conference Center in Traverse City.
The event will help employers learn about the new Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, and the steps to maintain compliance.
Employers can expect to learn about good faith compliance; avoiding fines, costly litigation and incarceration; basic preparedness for an audit; new documentation requirements; examining applicants’ documents; the Real I.D. Act; establishing document maintenance procedures; understanding your company’s liability under the law; your liability for independent contractors; your liability for an acquired workforce; social security “no match” letters; and more. There will be a question and answer period during the program.
Lea Ann Sterling, Esquire, of Sterling Law Office, Empire, will be the presenter at the workshop. Sterling is the only firm north of Grand Rapids practicing in the area of immigration law. Sterling regularly participates in the American Immigration Lawyers Association’s continuing legal education programs including Worksite Compliance and Raids Preparedness.
This workshop will benefit small business owners, human resource professionals, supervisors, managers, senior staff, accounting firms and office managers. The cost of the program is $35 per person which includes a continental breakfast. Registration is open until the time of the workshop.
