GAYLORD — Matt Stafford, owner of Dependable Concrete, was looking for a creative outlet, as well as something to pass the time during the slower winter months for his concrete business.
While he was in Las Vegas at a World of Concrete trade show in 2005, he saw a laser etching machine and was intrigued by the technology.
By 2008, Stafford had purchased a laser etcher and has launched a new business, Etched Memories, as well as continuing the concrete business, both located at 119 W. McCoy Road, Gaylord.
Etched Memories specializes in photograph-quality engraving.
“We put pictures on marble, granite and glass and ceramic tile, too,” Stafford said to make pieces of art both large and small to make a lasting memory, hence the business’ slogan: “Where memories become art.”
One example of something large was a 4-foot-by-5-foot mural of a white tiger which was spread out on the floor of the shop as it was being created. An example of a smaller item was a wedding picture etched on stone in the shape of a heart.
Stafford also displayed etched glassware and mirrors.
“Basically all that limits it is your imagination,” Stafford said. “We can do just about anything.”
He said prices for a completed etching start around $49 and range “to as much as people want to spend.”
Stafford was raised in Ann Arbor and lived in Houghton Lake before moving to Gaylord about 10 years ago. He said he opened Dependable Concrete about nine years ago.
Stafford will be marrying Lindsay Ramsey in June and already he has been creating etched glassware and other items to commemorate the special occasion.
He said he also plans to show off his work at the Alpenfest, wedding shows and other events.
The shop is open 8 a.m-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information call 732-1217 or visit
