Track roundup: J-L girls continue success with big win at I-Lakes

INDIAN RIVER — The Johannesburg-Lewiston girls track team continued its strong start to the early season, besting 12 other teams at Monday’s Inland Lakes Invitational.

The Cardinals finished with 101 points, ahead of Brimley (92), Inland Lakes (74), St. Ignace (73.5) and Traverse City Christian (58), among others.

The Cardinals again dominated the relays winning the 400m (55.16), 800m (1:54.01) and 1600m (4:42.73) relays and finishing second in the 3200m relay (11:17.71).

Relay winners included Leigha Webber, Megan Kennedy, Jessica Steil and Kelly Keys in the 400m, Katelyn Fortin, Webber, Keys and Stephanie Fisher in the 800m, Katelyn Fisher, Allison DeLuca, Stephanie Fisher and Fortin in the 1600m and Kelsey Michael, DeLuca, Jessie Owens and Stephanie Fisher in the 3200m.

Other high finishers for the Cardinals included Webber (second, 100m dash; second, 200m dash), Amanda Head (third, high jump), Keys (third, 100m dash; fourth, 200m dash), Bridget Fisher (third, discus; sixth, shot put), Kennedy (third, 300m hurdles; fifth, long jump; fifth 100m hurdles), Michael (third, 800m run), Fortin (fifth, 100m dash; fifth, 400m dash, Allison Burley (fifth, pole vault), Katelyn Fisher (sixth, 100m hurdles) and Heather Montague (sixth, discus).

St. Mary finished eighth in the competition. Leading the Snowbirds was Jessica Schmidlin (fourth, high jump), Jamie Topp (fifth, 300m hurdles), Stephanie LaRouche (fifth, 800m run), Keri O’Rourke (sixth, long jump) and Megan Kippe (sixth, pole vault). The Snowbirds also placed fourth in the 800m relay.

The J-L boys also competed, placing in three events.

Dan Boersema took third in the pole vault while the 400m relay of Sam Jones, Kris Steil, Roger Ellis and Eric Bush took third, as did the 800m relay of Jones, Steil, Jonathan Peterson and Travis Bliemeister.

St. Mary boys/girls

INDIAN RIVER — The St. Mary track teams had a slew of personal bests in a meet at Inland Lakes Thursday.

Junior Arron Sitkiewicz was the highest finisher, with a second-place toss of 38 feet-10.5 inches in the shot put.

Sophomore Clay Becker sprinted to a personal best in the 100m dash, taking fourth with a time of 11.90. He added a fourth in the long jump. Junior Michael Topp placed fourth in the 1600m run, while Pat Makarewicz and James Malleis achieved best times in that event. Malleis also had a best time in the 800m run.

St. Mary took third in both the 400m and 1600m relays. The 400 team consisted of Caleb Libke, Justin Rabish, Sitkiewicz and Becker while Libke, Cody Rivers, Rabish and Topp were on the 1600m team.

Junior Jessica Schmidlin took home a first in the high jump with a leap of 4 feet-9 inches. Placing second was sophomore Keri O’Rourke in the long jump, junior Megan Kippe in the pole vault and senior Stephanie LaRouche in the 800m run. Schmidlin placed fourth in the long jump, where O’Rourke, LaRouche and Jillian Schmidlin all had personal bests.

The St.Mary 800m relay team of Jamie Topp, O’Rourke, Jillian Schmidlin and Jessica Schmidlin placed fourth while the 400m team of Kippe, Jessica Schmidlin, Jillian Schmidlin and O’Rourke was third.

Abbie Koprowicz and Emily Wisniewski had personal bests in the shot put while Nicole Mouch recorder her best time in the 1600m run.

The Snowbirds are back in action today at another invitational at Johannesburg.

Grayling Boys

WEST BRANCH — The Grayling boys track and field team opened up its season Tuesday competing against some good competition at the Ogemaw Heights Invitational.

The Vikings placed second in their division.

“I am really proud of the team to come out and compete the way they did,” said Grayling coach Matt Collins. “Everyone ran, jump and threw hard.”

Taking first was Isaac VanNuck in the high jump (5-11) and 200m dash (24.03), Dustin Schutt in the discus (115-11) and Jason Drudge in the 1600m run (4:41.39).

Grayling’s 400m relay team of VanNuck, Brady Coe, Tory Myers and Ryan Cooper took first, as did the 1600m relay of VanNuck, Matt McDonald, Cooper and Drudge was.

Matt Letts was second in the discus with a personal best of 113-1 for the Vikings.

Grayling then competed in the prestigious Saginaw Valley State University Invitational with some strong individual performances.

VanNuck took home a first place in the high jump (6-0) while Drudge was third in the 1600m run. Grayling’s 1600m relay team was fifth and its 400m relay team was eighth.

Grayling Girls

UNIVERSITY CENTER — The Grayling girls had some strong performances, especially in the sprints, at the Division 3/4 portion of the Saginaw Valley State University Invitational Friday.

Hailey McMahon placed third in the 200m dash and fourth in the 100m dash while Rachel Ward was fourth in the high jump and fifth in the 400m dash.

Brianna Kirk placed sixth in the 100m dash while the Vikings took third in both the 400m and 800m dashes.

The 400 team was Jamie Hagerman, Annie Melroy, McMahon and Kirk while the 800 team was Hagerman, Melroy, Ward and McMahon.

JLMS girls

JOHANNESBURG — The Johannesburg-Lewiston Middle School girls track team hosted Onaway, Mancelona and St. Mary in the season-opener last week.

The Cardinals finished second by 0.5 points and turned in a number of strong performances with Alicia Rondo (high jump), Nadine Peterson (3200m run), Nikki Bush (800m run, 200m dash), Miranda House (100m dash) and Meredith DeLuca (70m dash, 400m dash) taking first. DeLuca’s time in the 400m dash of 1:06 set a school record.

Placing second was Tiffany Nickert (shot put), Rondo (100m dash) and Bush (400m dash).

Third place finishes went to Abby Schlicher (high jump, 800m run) and Penny Tokarski (200m dash).

J-L took second in three relays — Hannah Huff, Mattie Hummel, Shawna Galehouse and Nickert in the 800m relay, Rondo, Peterson, Schlicher and DeLuca in the 1600m relay and Mady Head, T.J. Gardner, House and Amanda Nickert in the 400m relay.
