Hurdling the field: GHS girls use depth to forge victory at big-time SVSU invite

UNIVERSITY CENTER — The Gaylord girls track team hit its stride Friday at the prestigious Saginaw Valley State University Invitational, winning the Division II competition by more than 20 points.
“I’m extremely pleased with our performance,” said coach Jeff Kalember. “It was only our second outdoor meet and we’re a bit ahead of where we were last year at this point. Coach Paul Balliet’s sprinters had a phenomenal day with great exchanges.”
Depth carried the victory as a number of Blue Devils scored some big points.
Sophomore Savannah Hypio led the way with four second-place finishes in the 200m dash, 400m dash and as a leg on the 800m and 1600m relays.
Sophomore Brittney Deerfield also placed in all four of her events, taking second in the long jump, third in the 100m dash and running on the first-place 400m relay and second-place 800m relay.
Senior Sloan Secord had a big day with a first in the 3200m run (12:45.57), a third in the 1600m run and anchoring the second-place 3200m relay.
Other standouts included junior Samantha Hunt (second, 1600m; second, 3200m; second 3200m relay), freshman Jenna Zaborowski (third, 300m hurdles; second, 1600m relay), junior Carlye Scheer (fourth, shot put, sixth 100m hurdles, first 400m relay), senior Maria Kulka (second 800m run; second, 1600m relay; second, 3200m relay), junior Amanda Keichline (eighth 200m dash, eighth 100m dash; first, 400m relay; second, 800m relay) sophomore Brooke Arnold (fourth, 800m run; second, 1600m relay; second, 3200m relay), freshman April Phillips (seventh, high jump), junior Taylor Hazlett (first, 400m relay), freshman Anna Kassuba (second, 3200m relay) and freshman Blair Secord (fifth, shot put).
