GATLINBURG, TENN. — The Gaylord High School bands returned from the Smoky Mountain Music Festival in Gatlinburg, Tenn. with superior ratings in their divisions.

The Gaylord Wind Ensemble and Concert Band competed in the April 18 festival, which featured 21 bands in six divisions at the Gatlinburg Convention Center.

Both groups competed against concert bands from across the United States within their respective band divisions/classifications. The Wind Ensemble earned a first place award in their “2A” Classification, while the Concert Band earned a second Place Award in their “A” Classification.

“As director I was extremely proud of our students and chaperones,” commented band director Pat Jarve. “They presented themselves and represented the Gaylord Band Program and community with pride. Both bands performed miraculously with great sensitivity and musicality. They have consistently improved over the course of the school year and this was a true reflection and culmination of their hard work and commitment to musical excellence,” he continued.

Additionally, many sections and individual students received certificates of excellence.  Excellence awards from the Wind Ensemble went to Kyle Wilson (senior), trumpet; Michael Hoult (senior), alto saxophone; and Meranda Karlskin (sophomore), xylophone. Excellence awards from the Concert Band went to   Jessica Ohlrich, flute; Erica Kettlewell (sophomore), alto saxophone; percussion section; and flute section.

The bands’ four-day tour of Gatlinburg also featured a three-hour guided tour of the Smoky Mountain National Park, a visit to Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies, an afternoon of enjoying rides and attractions at Dollywood Amusement Park, dining at the Gatlinburg Hard Rock Café, and ended their tour at the Black Bear Jamboree Dinner Show.

Jarve said the band will plan another big trip in four years, giving them time to raise money and every student the ability to participate.
