Otsego County board approves wage scale for elected county officials
Tuesday, May 6, 2008 11:08 PM EDT

OTSEGO COUNTY — The Board of Commissioners approved a new salary progression schedule for the four elected county officials — sheriff, treasurer, clerk/register of deeds and prosecutor — to begin in January 2009.

These positions will be put on a scale that includes a minimum salary and five steps.

The salaries range from a minimum of $40,480.93 to $50,519.33 for the treasurer and  clerk; $53,241.72 to $66,443.90 for sheriff and $71,634.17 to $89,397.25 for prosecutor (see chart). Currently, the clerk’s salary is $49,133.76; treasurer, $49,133.84; sheriff, $54,846.14; and prosecutor, $87,020.05.

Commissioners approved the changes at a night meeting April 22 at the Elmira Township Hall.

Previously, elected officials would receive a cost-of-living increase, which has been about 2 percent the past couple of years, County Administrator John Burt said.

All other county employees are on a salary grid, Burt noted. Also, officials new to a post usually received the outgoing official’s final salary.

“With the salary grid, incoming officials will at least receive the minimum salary on the wage scale,” Burt said. “The board can choose to set an official at a higher salary if they choose, which would normally be based on previous related experience.”

Like other county workers, once an elected official reaches the top of the scale, the cost-of-living increases kick in, Burt added.
