WHO'S YOUR HERO?
by Kurt Kolka

This weekend marks the beginning of the summer blockbuster season with the premiere of IRON MAN, a comic book hero for many a child since the 1960s.  And this summer, the invincible IronMan is only the first of several bigger-than-life heroes based on pulp heroes, comics or cartoons coming to the screen.  He'll be followed by INDIANA JONES and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, THE INCREDIBLE HULK, THE DARK KNIGHT  (Batman)  and  SPEED RACER.

There's seems no end of comic adaptions as the JUSTICE LEAGUE, SHAZAM! (featuring the Rock as its villain), CAPTAIN AMERICA, THE AVENGERS and ANT-MAN are among many movies in some stage of development right now.  Warren Beatty is also reportedly considering a second DICK TRACY movie.

Hollywood is looking for heroes.  And that begs the question ...

" Scooter88, Great point! The men and women defending our freedom are truly heroes to us all. God bless each and every american soldier. "

" The word HERO is a word that is missused, abused ect for people that do not desurve that distinction. Soldiers in combat, Fire fighters, Police officers and ordinary people that risk their own life with on reservation for them selves can be classified as a HERO. This is the essence of the word.
Anyone whom has served in military combat the fear tht most people have not idea what fear is about! That is why most soldiers have very little fear after being in combat. They have already faced death.
Please use the work HERO for it's intended purpose, for those individuals whom are accually HERO'S. "

" Dikembe Mutombo, played for the Denver Nuggets and a couple other NBA teams. He went to Georgetown on an academic scholarship, never played basketball until he was 18 and somehow became one of the all-time defensive greats. He was a super computer for a brain, the man speaks 7 languages fluently, is a gourmet chef, the president of the NBA players association, an avid volunteer for numerous charities, and an incredible athlete. There should be more professional athletes like Mr. Mutombo. "

" John Wayne never received the Congressional Medal of Honor. That medal is reserved to members of the United States military who have acted with extraordinary bravery and valor in the commission of their duties. John Wayne never served in the United States military. He was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, in 1979. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1980. The Congressional Gold Medal is considered the highest honor bestowed upon a civilian by our nation. He was certainly deserving of it. "

" Winston Churchill was and is my hero of all time (Earthly hero that is). Although born into wealth, he faced a lifetime of both tragedy and triumph. Of course his greatest triumph, his "finest hour" occurred during the early days of the Second World War when, against all odds, he motivated his nation to stand firm against aggression.
His example of leadership has become the gold standard by which leadership is measured. When faced with what you perceive to be an evil, never surrender or compromise with it. Fight it out till the bitter end, but always retain your sense of dignity while doing so. Never compromise your underlying values of decency, generosity, and belief in the rule of law.
The "Battle of Britain" reminds me of the phrase that "leaders are made not born". The "times can make the man". They certainly did with Winston Churchill. "

" John Wayne was my hero growing up. There is just no one who sat as tall in the saddle as the Duke. I love that he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and on the back was inscribed: "John Wayne, American."

Sure, I liked Superman, and Spiderman (who had the coolest theme song) but John Wayne, was my hero, no question. "

" i would have to say that my hero was and still is my dad he has allways been there for me from helping me build stuff to helping me start my career as a mechanic. "

" Ironman was great. I enjoyed the movie. If I had to choose a childhood hero, it would be Muhammad Ali. He was a great fighter, but he went further than that. He was a man who was willing to place his principals before his career, his fortune and his fame. I may not agree with every issue he stood toe-to-toe with but, I "respect" the fights he fought outside the ring and I respect the way he fought them. "

" Who was my hero growing up? I would have to say my dad.

While I hated most every minute of it, he made sure we never said "I am bored." If you said that, he found something to do outside and it ALWAYS involved work!

I remember when I was 13 he made us pick stones out of the driveway. I know it soesn't sound rough, but we had a long GRAVEL driveway.

I think I will give him a call... "
