2 northern Michigan karaoke singers advanced to state championships in Dearborn Heights
Tuesday, June 3, 2008 2:29 PM EDT

GAYLORD — Two Otsego County singers qualified for the state karaoke championships at Ford Lanes in Dearborn Heights Saturday.

And even though Jodilynne Pontz of Elmira said she didn’t bring home any honors, the experience was a good one, she reported.

“Everyone was so positive. It was amazing,” she said, vowing to participate in next year’s contest. “This isn’t the last people have heard from me.” She sang “Fancy” and “Why Haven’t I Heard from You,” both Reba McEntire songs, at the competition.

Co-finalist Rick Eubank of Elmira couldn’t make it to state championships but plans to try again next year.

Pontz and Eubank were among the 19 finalists invited to the championship for Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. They qualified from among 45,000 contestants in the region.

The pair advanced to the state competition during the annual, 12-week contest sponsored by Gaylord Bowling Center’s Blacklite Lounge, which concluded April 25.

Contestants were judged on song choice, performance and showmanship as they vied for the grand prize — a trip to Florida for a national sing-off.
