BOOST UP! Child booster & car seat event Thursday
Friday, June 20, 2008 4:09 PM EDT

GAYLORD — Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children ages 14 and under. This is mainly due to improper use of child safety seats including the lack of booster seat use. With the proper fit, a booster seat can significantly reduce a child’s risk of injury or death.

“Safety belts are designed to fit adults, not children,” said Darla Edwards, certified child safety seat technician at Otsego Memorial Hospital (OMH). “As of July 1, the Michigan law is changing to require booster seats for children under eight years of age and under 4-feet-9-inches tall. We are holding this event to educate parents about the new law and also to make this a fun family event for the children.”

OMH, along with local law enforcement and community agencies, are hosting the Boost Up! event in downtown Gaylord under the Pavilion on Court from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 26.

“Car seat safety inspections will be completed by certified safety seat technicians,” Edwards indicated.

Grant money from the OMH Foundation will be providing free booster seats, while supplies last. In order to make this possible, the OMH Foundation has received generous donations from the Wal-Mart Foundation, the Otsego County Child Welfare Alliance and private donors.

“We will also be giving informational handouts, coloring books, stickers, balloons, OMH first-aid kits and coupons provided by 7-11 for Slurpees,” said Edwards. “Shiner the Clown will be available to greet and interact with the children.”
