GAYLORD — It can’t be that time already, can it?

Amazingly, the high school sports season really kicks off this week, as game action begins for a number of local teams.

The Gaylord High boys soccer team, for one, has three games this week — at Cheboygan Monday, home against Tawas Area Wednesday and home against Ogemaw Heights Friday.

Those looking to get their first peek at the Gaylord and St. Mary football teams can do so Friday, as each team will host a scrimmage.

St. Mary will battle Rogers City at 10 a.m. at the St. Mary High practice field, while Gaylord will be tested by Midland Dow in a 6 p.m. scrimmage at the GHS football stadium. The GHS junior varsity and freshman teams will scrimmage Dow at 4 p.m. Johannesburg-Lewiston will take to the road Wednesday, scrimmaging in Manton with a field that also includes Mesick and Coleman.

Volleyball action also begins toward the end of the week as Gaylord opens the season at a tournament in Roscommon Friday. St. Mary kicks off the year at home Saturday with an invitational tournament, while J-L travels to Inland Lakes for a tournament.

Next week sets up an even-busier following week that features the first Friday of the high school football season. On Aug. 29, Gaylord opens the gridiron slate at Escanaba, while St. Mary hosts Onaway and J-L hosts Central Lake.
