There's still time to donate to Miller's cross-country cause
Thursday, August 21, 2008 4:04 PM EDT

GRAND RAPIDS — After making her way across the Rockies and through the Great Plains and Midwest, Katrina Miller arrived in Michigan last week.

As part of the Sea to Sea bike tour to promote awareness and raise money for poverty alleviation, Miller has joined more than a hundred others on a bike ride from Seattle, Wash. to the New Jersey shoreline.

The group stopped off in the Grand Rapids and Holland areas last week.

The following was written by her mother, Delphine Miller of Gaylord:

“Katrina is in good spirits and continues to ride despite needing supports on both knees and nagging back pain that is probably related to her car accident of last spring. She knows that she rides for those who can’t and who need our help to break the cycle of poverty that they are in. Did you know that for every four strokes of her bike pedals, a child dies from malnutrition, and that Katrina will be taking approximately 1 million strokes throughout this tour? Do the numbers and you realize that adds up to 250,000 children dying during the nine weeks of the tour. At least 1.4 million children die yearly worldwide due to a lack of adequate nutrition and/or clean water.

Another shocking statistic is that, per year, Americans typically spend double the amount of money needed to feed the starving of this world on items to lose weight?

Katrina would like to reach her goal of raising $10,000 to help end the cycle of poverty. Remember, her costs for the trip have been covered by herself and her parents and that all funds raised by the bikers go to others. Please consider giving up a dinner out of that double latte  and donating to seatosea.org in Katrina’s name. Donations of any dollar amount are needed and appreciated.”
