Robert F. Spencer got off easy. Too easy. As the truck driver in the accident which killed four Taylor University students and one employee, he should have served every minute of his four-year sentence, at least the two years for which he didn’t get credit for time served.

The family of Whitney Cerak is entitled to its opinion. Whitney was initially believed to be among those killed, later being found under the wrong identity in a Grand Rapids hospital. The family is happy for the driver to be with his family.

For the four others who were seriously injured; the nine hours beyond the federal limit he had been driving; for claiming at the scene that mechanical malfunction caused the accident ... Spencer should have served his entire sentence.

There needed to be an example set. In this case we believe it was the wrong one.
