Garber defeats Gaylord in swimming

GAYLORD — The Gaylord girls swim team set 13 personal-best times, but lost its first meet of the season Tuesday to Essexville-Garber, 102-78.
Freshman Stephanie Weir posted best times in both the 200 freestyle (2:17.72) and 500 freestyle (6:11.74) on the way to a pair of first-place finishes.
Junior Sam Demaree also posted a personal best in diving, taking first-place with a score of 136.55.
Gaylord’s 400 freestyle relay team of freshman Ellie Callison, junior Kamryn Kurtzner, junior Meranda Karlskin and Weir also took first with a time of 4:25.39.
Callison took second place in both the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly, posting best times in each. Other second place finishes for Gaylord included junior Amy Skerratt in the 100 breaststroke, and the 200 medley relay of freshman Meranda Fairchild, Skerratt, Karlskin and Callison.
Placing third for the Blue Devils was Karlskin in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly, senior Stephanie Fiser in the 50 freestyle and Kurtzner in the 100 backstroke.
Other personal best times went to Kathryn Boyce, Ginny Courtright, Avery Springborn and Lynsey Ellafrits in the 50 freestyle, Nikki Burroughs and Boyce in the 100 freestyle, Jessie Love in the 500 freestyle and Courtright n the 100 backstroke.
The Blue Devils (2-1) have another tough meet Tuesday at Bay City John Glenn.
