Cardinals sweep Mancelona in volleyball

MANCELONA — The Johannesburg-Lewiston volleyball team came up with an excellent performance Tuesday in a Ski Valley Conference sweep at Mancelona.
The Cardinals downed the Lady Ironmen 25-17, 25-19 and 25-11, behind an aggressive performance.
Kayla Carroll had eight kills and three aces for J-L, while Mary Schlicher had seven kills and three aces. Amanda Head had four kills, three aces and a block kill, while Jessie Owens added six kills and one block kill.
Ashlie House, Kisha Kucharek and Allison DeLuca were credited with excellent play from the back row.
J-L then traveled to powerhouse Pellston and came up short, falling 18-25, 18-25 and 7-25.
Carroll had eight kills and one block kill for the Cardinals, while Owens had eight kills. Head added four kills, two block kills and two aces.
Schlicher and DeLuca provided some nice digs to help set up the offense.
The Cardinals host Bellaire Tuesday in the conference finale.
JV Cards continue season
MANCELONA — The Johannesburg-Lewiston junior varsity volleyball team dropped two out of three games at Mancelona Tuesday.
The Cardinals dropped the first two 16-25 and 18-25, before winning the third 15-3.
Allison Burley led the Cardinals with eight aces and two kills, while Meridith DeLuca had seven kills and Meghan Makranyi had three aces and two kills.
J-L then played at an excellent Pellston team Thursday, falling 14-25, 18-25 and 7-15.
“Our players rose to Pellston’s level of play and our athletes played well against them,” said J-L coach Lynn Renaldi-Hause.
Burley led the Cardinals with seven aces and two kills, while DeLuca added two kills and four blocks.
