To the Editor: Don’t criticize, participate

To the Editor:
We are good at criticizing the way they vote, second-guessing their motives, and making fun of the personal mannerisms of our elected officals, none of which helps them do a better job. What would be helpful? We need to let them know where we stand on the issues that confront them. Like the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA), that would do away with even the smallest restrictions on abortions; i.e. Parental Consent laws, Informed Consent laws, etc.
No newly elected or re-elected person starts off with a clean slate. They inherit already deeply entrenched bureaucracies and established policies hard to do away with or reform. Many of the dreams of change and reform they hoped to accomplish will be shattered on the hard rock of the reality of politics - compromise.
Understanding the difficult task before them, let’s commit ourselves to praying daily for all those in authority over us at the local, state and federal levels that they will govern wisely and well.
It’s good to remember that the person making the most noise about the direction of the boat is not usually the one at the oars.

When a majority of voters dont vote or get involved, the political field is left to two types of people, those with an interest in the status quo (large corporations and their lobbyists) or those with truly strange philosophies who are out in "left field" and are pursuing a private ideological agenda.
Everyone should get involved, educate themselves about the issues, and at least try to be objective. "
