New faces: MSU Extension appoints SNAP-ed coordinator

Diane Rellinger has been named as Michigan State University (MSU) Extension’s new North Region SNAP-Ed (formerly Food Stamp Nutrition Education) Program Coordinator for the 21-county region of Michigan’s northern Lower Peninsula.

Formerly a two-county Extension Educator working with the SNAP-Ed program, Rellinger represented Emmet and Charlevoix counties. Rellinger will provide the region’s SNAP-Ed Program Associates and other MSU Extension academic staff with educational resources, programs and grant support in developing action plans to deliver the SNAP-Ed curriculum and grant program across the region.

As a member of the MSU Extension Nutrition Area of Expertise Team, Rellinger will be responsible for helping MSU Extension program staff use the current research and knowledge base to support healthy lifestyles for families. Rellinger has a bachelor’s degree in education from Oklahoma Christian College.

“I am extremely pleased to have such a quality educator serving the north region,” said Patrick Cudney, MSU North’s regional director. “Diane brings expertise, direct experience and a passion for nutrition and healthy families to this important role.”

Rellinger begins her new appointment Saturday and will be housed at the Otsego County MSU Extension office in Gaylord.

Appointment: Fairchild named to MOGA board

Nelson R. Fairchild Jr. of Breitburn Management, Gaylord, was recently appointed to a two-year term on the board of directors of the Michigan Oil and Gas Association (MOGA). His term begins Jan. 1.

MOGA represents the exploration, drilling, production, transportation, processing and storage of crude oil and natural gas in Michigan. MOGA has more than 800 members, including independent oil companies, major oil companies and the exploration arms of various utility companies and royalty owners.

Food drive: Maurices accepting nonperishable food

Maurices in Gaylord will be holding a food drive, collecting nonperishable food items Nov. 2-9 to benefit the Otsego County Food Pantry in partnership with the Otsego County United Way to support families in need.

Bring nonperishable food to Maurices, 1427 W. Main St., and as a thank-you, donors will receive a 20 percent off coupon for one regular-priced item for every three food items donated.

The Food Pantry of Otsego County serves families in the local community throughout the year and all donations will stay in the community.

“Unfortunately, the need for support continues to grow,” said Nicole Karslake, Maurices store manager and organizer of the event. “This is one small way that we can help out.”
