Robert D. Bonner, age 91, of Gaylord and Elk Rapids, died on Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008 at Otsego Memorial Hospital.

Robert was born on April 8, 1917 in Detroit, the son of George and Helen (Martin) Bonner. After graduating Fordson High School in Dearborn in 1939, Robert attended an electrical trade school and began his 43-year career at Ford Motor Company. He was in the Army in WWII, stationed in Italy and was a POW in Moosberg, Germany. Robert was wed to Jean Altounian on Nov. 8, 1947 and raised two children, Marilyn and Russell.

Robert spent his retirement years in the garden and intently listening to music. He was off-beat and creative, finding unique ways to solve problems. Being kind-hearted and sensitive, it was easy for Robert to make friends and was a positive force in the lives of so many people. His strong convictions destined him to make certain choices in life, but he was always very accepting and tolerant.

Robert is survived by his daughter, Marilyn (Bradley) Porter; son, Russell (Wendy) Bonner; grandchildren, Andrea (Charles) Peters, Michael Bonner, and Stephanie Bonner; and many nieces and nephews. His wife, Jean, died on Aug. 21, 1996. His parents; brother, Lester Bonner; and sister, Harriet Upton also preceded him in death.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008 at 3 p.m. at Covell Funeral Home, 312 Pine St., Elk Rapids MI 49629. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
