LEWISTON -- Citing “difficult economic times,” the Lewiston Area Chamber of Commerce board of directors unanimously voted during the Nov. 20 regular meeting to cut back on chamber hours of service.

During these cuts, Marcia Andrews, chamber executive director will not be working in the Chamber office, according to Chamber chairperson Elaine Dixon. Andrews was temporary laid off during the restructuring process.

Office hours will be adjusted to Fridays, noon-4 p.m. and Saturdays, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. The office will be staffed by volunteers.

“This year’s events have not produced the amount of revenue as in the past,” said Dixon. “As a result, the income is down for 2008. The board of directors (has) decided not to borrow funds or prematurely use funds for 2009.”

Cutting back hours of service will assist in keeping the chamber on track financially to start the year and remain viable throughout 2009, she stated.

Further, Dixon added, the Chamber is solvent and has funds to meet expenses through the remainder of the year.

“The board of directors (has) worked diligently to formulate a balanced budget for 2009,” she added.

Andrews declined to comment on the board’s decision -- referring questions to Dixon.
