Community Financial makes contribution to J-L SchoolsCommunity Financial recently made a contribution to Johannesburg-Lewiston Community Schools on behalf of the credit union’s annual Community Shares program.
The donation was made possible by Community Financial’s positive financial performance during 2008. The district is among seven in Michigan to receive a total of $5,300 from Community Shares, a program initiated by the credit union nine years ago.
“We are very pleased to be able to provide funds that benefit students and local schools,” said credit union CEO Bill Lawton. “This is another way that Community Financial is making a positive difference in the communities we serve.”
Dawn Beswick, manager of Community Financial’s Lewiston branch, recently presented the credit union’s donation to Superintendent James Hilgendorf and Lewiston Elementary Principal Rick Holt.
“We greatly appreciate Community Financial’s ongoing support,” said Holt, who indicated that the funds will be used for the school’s reading program.
Headquartered in Plymouth, membership in Community Financial is open to anyone who lives, works, worships, volunteers or attends school in the Michigan cities, townships or counties of Plymouth, Canton, Northville, Novi, Alpena, Otsego and Montmorency. With more than 40,000 members, Community Financial provides financial services to members at eight branch locations and through a variety of automated and online services.

Honors: OMH earns governor’s awardsOtsego Memorial Hospital (OMH) has received two 2007 Governor’s Awards for Improving Patient Safety and Quality of Care in the Hospital Setting from the Michigan Peer Review Organization (MPRO). OMH received the accolade for enhancing patient care for Appropriate Care Measures and Surgical Care Improvement.
“Award recipients are committed to providing Michigan citizens with high quality health care,” said Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm.
Award criterion aligns with enhancing care in a number of clinical areas. OMH choose from pre-selected clinical areas. These clinical areas are designated as national health care priorities by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
OMH established a multidisciplinary team to spearhead improvement measures using proven, evidence-based practices. Organization leaders, medical staff providers and interdisciplinary team members collaborated to develop and consistently implement evidence-based practices, which have created many highly reliable processes at OMH. One example of actions taking place that led to OMH’s first Appropriate Care Measures Award include the execution of specific orders that address each of the core measures when diagnosing and treating acute myocardial infarction, heart failure and pneumonia.
The Surgical Care Improvement Project incorporates several processes that have sustained safe, efficient and high quality outcomes allowing OMH the Surgical Care Improvement Award for the second year in a row.
MPRO and the governor honored OMH at an award ceremony in October at the Radisson Plaza Hotel in Kalamazoo.
