The Herald Times' View: The great gift of giving
Friday, December 26, 2008 2:06 PM EST

As Christmas 2008 has now passed, all the many Otsego County volunteers who helped make this a merry holiday for those less fortunate should give themselves a big pat on the back.

Volunteers gave their time to pack and wrap food, clothing and toys and the Gaylord community as a whole continues to give generously to various local charities to make the holidays brighter for families in need.

Some numbers from 2008:

• Adopt-a-Family helped 127 families, up from 103 in 2007.

• Take Time to Care assisted 745 families.

• Kiwanis food baskets were delivered to 603 families and 456 received an elf bag.

As the numbers of those in need climbs in these tough economic times, it’s great to see that generosity is alive and well in Otsego County.

But again, it’s a good time to remember that the need doesn’t go away with the holidays, so let’s keep up the generosity to make the new year bright for those who are having a tough time making ends meet.

See Wednesday’s Herald Times for a wrap up of area Christmas programs.
