Relief on way for M-32

GAYLORD -- Construction resumed this week on the I-75 crossing project at McCoy Road.

Bob Felt, spokesman for Michigan Dept. of Transportation, said the contractor would be paving driveways.

The bridges also received a coat of green paint.

During the week of July 13 crews will be removing the building at the intersection where McCoy Road will meet Dickerson Road, and continuing the installation of storm sewer.

That building, according to Mike Roper with the Otsego County Road Commission, is a former crematorium.

He added McCoy Road will curve around the gas facility on Dickerson Road -- a task which will be much simpler than relocating the million-dollar facility where Gaylord’s gas supply originates.

Roper said M&M Excavating was approximately a month ahead of schedule on the project and spent the last month finishing projects in Grayling and the Upper Peninsula. Felt said M&M was waiting for the proper tests of the building to take place before demolition.

The project, funded through a $12 million federal earmark plus state and local matches, is slated to be complete Oct. 31; however, Felt said the project may still be completed ahead of schedule despite the month break.

The project involves joining McCoy Road to Dickerson Road at the Milbocker Road intersection and raise I-75 with two bridges over McCoy Road. Northbound and southbound traffic is open over the bridges, and the temporary stretches of highway have been removed.

" Sure would have been nice to have the project done for summer if it was that close to being done. The businesses on 27 would have probably been very grateful. "

" The "project" could be done now, but the Nowicki's of M & M Excavating are dragging this out for some reason, probably financially benificial to them selves as they have had seven to twelve workers idle for the last three weeks. There is NO reason this job isn't finished, other than the fact Mark Nowicki is a control freak and the rest of the company is afraid to stand up to him. Your tax dollars at work. "

" Sounds to me like we were over charged by about a month for this project. "
